Robert A. Schulman, MD

A pioneer in integrative pain medicine and regenerative musculoskeletal medicine, Sonoma County physician Robert Schulman, M.D. has been diagnosing treating, preventing, and healing acute and chronic pain for more than two decades.

His practice is dedicated to integrative pain medicine and regenerative musculoskeletal medicine, which places Dr. Schulman as a physician at the forefront of a new renaissance in medicine. He is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with additional board certification in Pain Medicine, Integrative Medicine, and Medical Acupuncture. He is a fully trained practitioner in Functional Medicine and is one of a handful of medical doctors who are Registered Herbalists with the American Herbalist Guild.

Dr. Schulman also has extensive training in interventional ultrasonography and regenerative medicine, including the use of platelet rich plasma injections and ozone. He is one of a growing group of physicians who utilize high fat, low carbohydrate diets in the treatment of obesity, type two diabetes, and chronic pain.

Dr. Schulman continuously reads medical texts and journals to further his education and travels throughout the country in order to attend workshops and learn cutting edge techniques in his field. He utilizes the most advanced practices and techniques to maximize function and improve quality of life.

Dr. Schulman is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and a member of several medical organizations including the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic MedicineAmerican Herbalist Guild, Academy of Integrative Pain Management, Institute for Functional Medicine, American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine, The Society of Cannabis Clinicians, and the California Medical Association.

Dr. Schulman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1991. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The New York Hospital/Weill-Cornell University Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Schulman trained in medical acupuncture at the Helms Medical Institute and in functional medicine at the Institute for Functional Medicine. He studied Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Tristate College of Acupuncture in New York City. He studied Massage Therapy at the Santa Fe School of Massage.

Dr. Schulman has been involved in medical education for many years, including research articles, textbook chapters, books, and magazine interviews and has given many national and international lectures. Dr. Schulman is the author of Solve it With Supplements (Rodale Press 2006). At The New York Hospital/Weill-Cornell University Medical Center in New York City, Dr. Schulman held a dual faculty appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine departments. At the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Richmond, VA, he served as the Medical Director of Integrative Medicine, and a clinical instructor at Virginia Commonwealth Medical School.

Dr. Schulman served in 2021 as the President of the Sonoma County Medical Association and was voted Top Doctor in Sonoma County (Sonoma Magazine) in 2016 and 2018. He currently serves on the Operation Committee of the Meritage Medical Group.

Dr. Schulman is a Clinic Director with the Hackett-Hemwall-Patterson Foundation medical charity (prolotherapy), and a Senior Preceptor with the Helms Medical Institute (medical acupuncture). He is an Expert Reviewer for the Medical Board of California.
