Since 2004 I have had spinal stenosis. At that time I was told by a surgeon to “come back to him when I can’t take it anymore”.  At that time I went to see Dr. Schulman for acupuncture. He was able to keep my problem from advancing from 2004 to 2011 which is when he moved his practice from NY to the Bay Area.

He’s an extraordinary doctor. He’s very open to questions. He researches your particular problem and then educates you so you can learn what is going on and what to expect. I do feel this is the way things should be but I don’t normally expect it. Under Dr. Schulman’s care, I felt real care and concern about my situation.   –Artist

I first came to see Dr. Schulman about ten years ago for treatment of some non-specific neck pain I was having. He treated me with medical acupuncture and osteopathic manual therapy. I also worked with one of the Feldenkrais trained Physical Therapists in the his office. That was years ago, and I am no longer bothered by neck pain.

As part of the comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Schulman noticed that I had mildly elevated blood pressure. He treated me for it using herbs and supplements, and at present, my blood pressure is stable without the use of medication. Over the years I’ve gone to see Dr. Schulman for conditions as diverse as sore throat, cough, indigestion, insomnia and general life stress. His methods always served me well, and I’m very sorry that he’s no longer in NY. It’s been impossible to find someone to replace him. I may just have to move out to California!  –IT Executive

Dr. Schulman resolved extremely painful trigger finger in three fingers on my left hand through a course of acupuncture and manual therapy techniques. At the time of treatment I was 44. Likely a complication of Type 1 Diabetes for 33 years, I had systemic fascial adhesion, which caused chronic pain and limited mobility all over (shoulders, knees, hips, arches).

Before going under Dr. Schulman’s care, I had surgery on my right hand to release triggering in all five fingers. Before committing to surgery I had done intensive occupational occupational therapy on the right but ultimately was not improving. But because my recovery from the surgery on the right was so traumatic, when the left hand began to trigger I was desperate to avoid repeating it. I had three cortisone injections (the most recommended), did OT, NYSAIDs. My hand doctor told me that as a Type 1 diabetic it was basically impossible to avoid the surgery based on his experience.

Over the course of a year, Dr. Schulman’s treatment focused not just on the triggering fingers but on the fascia binding the tendons and muscles in the hand, arm and shoulder.

I have remained free of triggering for two years now.Thank you, Dr. Schuman!  –Fundraising Executive

I have known Robert Schulman since 1998 when I attended a comprehensive course on medical acupuncture for physicians. Dr. Schulman was a faculty member. In 2006 I developed severe back pain and because of this, could no longer work as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist. I was able to see Dr. Schulman within two days. After taking a medical history and performing a physical examination, he immediately started acupuncture treatment to help alleviate the pain. He ordered the appropriate radiographic procedures and blood tests, introduced me to Feldenkrais physical therapy, prescribed Western medication, as well as Chinese herbal preparations.

He oversaw my exercise program, corresponded with my attorney and insurance companies. He was a constant source of encouragement and helped me avoid surgery.  He is a hero to me.  –Physician

I was a patient of Dr Schulman for 10 years in New York, and would have been a life-long patient if he had not moved to the west coast.  Initially I was referred to him for my chronic back pain, and I was immediately struck by his genuine interest in getting to the heart of the issue.  In each appointment, he would listen carefully to my comments on how my back was faring, then thoughtfully tailor the acupuncture accordingly.  Over time my back issues started to noticeably improve, and with periodic appointments the pain changed from being chronic to being rarely episodic.

Equally important, Dr Schulman essentially became my Primary Care doctor, helping me via both Eastern and Western medicine approaches to a variety ailments that my Internist wasn’t able to address.  He was willing to try a range of approaches until we hit upon the one that best remedied my issue, and always made himself available to answer questions and concerns between appointments.  Unlike most doctors who seem stuck in the time that they studied for their medical degree, Dr Schulman is passionate about his profession and makes a point of staying absolutely current, by reading a host of medical journals and studies, additional training, and constant dialogue with specialists.

As a senior executive, I have typical New Yorker standards, and I can say that Dr Schulman surpassed that very high bar — he is a uniquely talented doctor with a profound caring interest in his patients.  –Executive

I consulted Dr. Schulman because I was having a great deal of swelling in my knee and severe pain in the knee and back of my leg, related to old injuries, arthritis and a recent cartilage tear. Walking was painful, and getting up and down stairs was quite awkward because the swelling made it hard to bend the knee enough to deal with steps. The pain was keeping me awake at night. During the day, if I sat for more than a few minutes, when I stood up the pain in the back of my leg was almost enough to bring tears. A surgeon wanted to operate, but I had already had knee surgery and wanted to avoid more. I figured I’d try acupuncture because I had nothing to lose. Truth be told, I didn’t expect to gain much, if anything. As a science writer, I approached Dr. Schulman and the idea of acupuncture with a certain degree of skepticism and low expectation. I was stunned and delighted to find that the very first treatment nearly eliminated the awful pain in the back of my leg. That alone was worth a great deal, but the pain and swelling also diminished with a few more treatments. Dr. Schulman has a deft hand with the needles and also gave me excellent advice on using anti inflammatories and other pain medicine to help control my knee troubles. He was thorough, ordered MRI’s and spent  a lot of time with me. His kind help definitely got me on the road to recovery. I never expected to feel as good as I’m feeling now.  –Science Writer

After years of foot pain which limited my mobility, I was fortunate to find Dr. Schulman. Previous efforts using cortisone injections, orthotics and pain medications did not work at all.  My pain is mostly gone after working with Dr. Schulman using acupuncture and exercise.  I have resumed activities like walking and hiking which were impossible before.  I am looking forward to an upcoming trip which will include a lot of walking which I can do now!   Thank you Dr. Schulman!  –Telecom Manager

I met Dr. Schulman at the Helms Medical Institute physician acupuncture course, where he was an instructor and I was a student. After the course was completed, I began seeing Dr. Schulman as a patient. Over time, we developed both a professional collaboration ( we have authored several publications together), and a friendship which is extremely valuable to me as a physician. With Dr. Schulman, I have a sympathetic and extremely knowledgeable colleague who is always willing to share wisdom and advice, and discuss difficult patient problems. I have been inspired over the last several years by Dr. Schulman’s unquenchable intellectual curiosity and continuous quest to better himself as a physician and continue gaining new knowledge and skills, in order to be able to serve his patients in the best possible way. As a patient, I have come to appreciate his patience, empathy, and a calm, unhurried approach. I trust Dr. Schulman both as a patient and as a colleague, and deeply regret that he is no longer in New York.  –Physician

Dr. Schulman is a physician’s physician. He combines an empathic bed-side manner with a current knowledge of evidence-based medicine. He is able to merge traditional western medical diagnoses and treatments with Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. He provides his patients with top quality physician referrals in other specialties when needed. In my case, he enabled me to avoid bilateral knee replacements recommended by three other highly regarded medical specialists by referring me to one of a small number of physicians nation-wide who administer a patient’s own platelets into their diseased joints. I was told that I would never be able do recreational walking without the replacements. After the rehabilitation period from my platelet treatment, I am able to do a full range of exercise.  –Physician

I was under Dr. Schulman’s care for almost 5 years.  He treats the “whole body”, and sometimes, even the soul.  I initially saw Dr. Schulman to treat my fibromyalgia.  My weekly acupuncture treatments helped aleviate my condition. I also had Crohn’s disease and Dr. Schulman spent endless time researching a way to treat it.  His treatment put my disease in remission.  He literally changed my life. I visited Dr. Schulman at least once a week, and at every visit his treatment focused on any problem I had.

It is rare to find a doctor who actually listens.  Dr. Schulman is a caring, patient and gentle person.  His decision to leave New York was a sad time for me but I wish him all the best in his new practice.  –Pet Therapist

After spilling boiling hot coffee and grounds on my hand, I was in a great deal of pain and I feared permanent scarring.  Dr. Schulman recommended acupuncture treatments. He was extremely kind and compassionate toward me and was very generous with his time and knowledge.   After two treatments and only 5 days after the burn occurred, I no longer even required a bandage.  After 2 weeks, the only evidence of my burn, was a slight reddening of the skin where the burn had been.  It is clear now that there will be no scarring.  I had no idea that acupuncture was an effective treatment for burns.  I look forward to recommending Dr. Schulman to anyone I know who requires medical attention.  –Psychologist

Dr. Schulman and his staff dealt very effectively with my shoulder and back pain.  I haven’t thought of that shoulder pain in years–which is perhaps the greatest compliment any patient can give his doc.  Dr. Schulman makes needles “not scary,” his cupping methods feel great, and don’t forget to ask for a needle in the happy point!  –Writer/Director
